Meeting Tadao Ando in Taipei

Reprinted from “The Economy of Aesthetics”
By Wei-Xiong Zhan, managing editor of “Business Next Biweekly”

Tadao Ando, the Japanese celebrated architect, had a speech in Taipei. The lecture hall was packed with two thousand people. This old “naughty boy,” who only finished high school education and was once a boxer, presented his splendid story in his speech.

Which architect’s “work” would you like to purchase? Today there are two extremely celebrated as well as influential architects in the world; one is the American Frank Gehry who designed the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain; and another is the Japanese Tadao Ando. The former presents Post-Modernism, full of whimsy-whamsy and unique modeling; and the latter presents Asian Minimalism, built in simple concrete, creating a bright and abstruse atmosphere of space, which is very attractive to western people. The reason they are so hot nowadays is not only they both won the Pritzker Architecture Prize, which is like the Architecture “Nobel Prize” (Gehry won it in 1989, and Ando in 1995), but also there are few architectures who have unique personalities, as well as extreme power and influence in the world. Besides, their schedules are so occupied that it seems almost impossible to work with them in a hundred years.
Because of the reasons above, I had to go to Tadao Ando’s speech no matter what happened when he came to Taiwan on October 9th in 2004.

1. Struggling is the all in an architect’s life
At the beginning of his speech, Ando joked that he was disappointed because the audience that packed the hall were architects attracted by his reputation. What he really wanted was to communicate with students who were interested in architecture. The topic of his speech was “Architecture Placed Hope on Dream.” Obviously, he thought that this topic might not be inspiring to those practicing architects.

Just as expected, he did not talk about designing skills, material uses, or spatial perspective, but described how he established the dream to be an architect in poverty, how he struggled in Japan’s bureaucracy system and fought with businessmen philistines. Behind the slide show of his works, I saw how a young dreamer got insulted, but still insisted on doing the right thing. He said, “my life as an architect is a process of ‘combating’”

For Taiwanese who are so familiar with Ando’s design, the metaphor of “combating” sounds strange. His design always presents a tranquil atmosphere, simple concrete walls, and huge windows reflecting the quiet moving sunlight, even a dropping leaf would sound noisy. Why did he describe it as a combat?

However, it was understandable if you think deeply. For Japanese who survived after World War II, they tended to establish their wealth and individual value. Thus, Ando’s design, which did not fit huge famous paintings or cellarets, became a conflict. Besides, temples, museums, and apartments designed by Ando were not made of gorgeous material, which could show people’s luxury taste and a group value. No wonder he said that he began fighting against Japanese social values as soon as he started doing this job at the age of 28 in 1969.

2. When you become a figure with great achievements, your dream also grows
What impressed me in his speech was his idea to be an architect bringing “peace” to the world. After 1990 he devoted himself to public welfare cases such as improvement of public spaces, renewal of wastes, and civic parks. Of course, he had to fight against those bureaucrats and construction firms to make his dreams come true. For instance, he devoted his energy to reconstruct the collapsed communities after the Osaka-Kobe Earthquake in 1995. Through planting a million trees, the habitants felt they were mentally rescued from the shadow of death. The new Kansai Airport in Osaka was built by the famous Italian Renzo Piano who designed the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Renzo Piano’s design was excellent (he was the winner of Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1998), but caused bald mountain ridges around Awaji Island, Inland Sea. As a resident of Osaka, Ando took the initiative to rescue the bald mountain ridges. He planted thirty thousands trees, and convinced the construction firms to build hotels. He kept on caring for this area for ten years, and he was proud that the “trees finally are four meters tall,” and “David Beckham and his wife stayed here for two months as the FIFA World Cup took place. I am so glad that I don’t let my boss down.”

Through Ando’s excellent speech, you have to believe that the world will give you a chance if you have a great dream. Tadao Ando, who only finished a high school education and got his architect license through self-study, has become one of the most celebrated architects in the world. When you become a figure with great achievement, your dream also grows. Isn’t it so inspiring?
