Design and import

By Roy Huang
With the right methods, it is not difficult to obtain information on architectural and interior design through the imported books, the Internet.

I am usually jittery over the lack of information; therefore, my daily assignment and also my interest is to retrieve massive information and relevant trend through different channels.

Few days ago, I happened to read a design presentation at an MRT station from an influential interior design magazine published in Taiwan.  The designer groups are currently pretty professional and influential in Taiwan; however, their design makes me uncomfortable and disappointed.  I was also disappointed at the two professional organizations.  The design is completely transplanted and plagiarized from others.  It is hard to believe that they can even cover up the truth to deceive while talking shamelessly and volubly about the spirit of design.

In the internationalized era and world, imitation is somehow inevitable under the environment in Taiwan.  It is understandable to create something by referring to other’s experience, spirit, and conception to inspire our design. Everybody is doing so including the Westerners.  However, whatever we learned, we must digest, organize, and reconsider it before it flows naturally within our minds and becomes our own.  It is irresponsible to devour everything without digesting, which is totally disgusting and unbearable.

In many situations, not everything has to be original; however, it should not be merely import of design from other countries.  A designer should, at least, respect his own profession and knowledge.  Hopefully, this kind of operation will not become a habit or even mainstream in the field of design in Taiwan.  Designers and the media should inspect themselves and reconsider their social responsibilities.
